Melon Pun, also known as Pineapple Bun, is a shared memory for people in Taiwan and across neighboring parts of Asia. Despite its famous name, this beloved baked treat contains neither melon nor pineapple; instead, it’s named after the crisscross pattern on its sweet, crispy topping.
To echo the concept of vintage posters, CC soaked white cotton paper in coffee to create its coloring. A large 19 × 20 inch poster was produced using five colors through silkscreen printing. The cat characters are inspired by her beloved cats, Nyaw Nyaw, along with creative flavors and forms that differ from traditional pineapple buns—such as soda, apple, and green tea flavors.
The crab, fish, and turtle are common basic shapes seen in Taiwan. Beside them are annotations written in Taiwanese phonetic notation, hoping to spark small moments of cultural exchange while sharing the charm of the Taiwanese language.
The typography is originally hand-drawn, featuring “Melon Pun” and CC’s artist name, “Seiya Bakery,” written in Japanese.
This original artwork was captured using a high-resolution large-format scanner and reproduced with laser inkjet printing on matte photo paper. The texture of the original paper, the dyeing process, and the handmade silkscreen printing are faithfully preserved. If you also love pineapple buns, let this piece decorate a cozy corner of your lovely home!
